THE PAKISTAN
ENGINEERING COUNCIL
The Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) is a
regulatory body that plays a crucial role in overseeing and promoting
engineering education and the engineering profession in Pakistan. Established
in 1976 through an Act of the Parliament, the council operates under the
administrative control of the Ministry of Science and Technology of the
Government of Pakistan.
The primary objectives of the Pakistan
Engineering Council are:
Accreditation of Engineering Programs: PEC
is responsible for evaluating and accrediting engineering degree programs
offered by various universities and institutions across Pakistan. Accreditation
ensures that these programs meet the required standards of quality and
relevance, producing competent and skilled engineers.
Registration of Engineers: PEC serves as the
central authority for the registration of engineers in Pakistan. Engineers who
have completed accredited engineering programs are required to register with
the council to be recognized as qualified professionals. Registration helps in
ensuring that only competent individuals are allowed to practice engineering in
the country.
Regulation and Code of Conduct: The council
establishes and enforces a code of conduct and ethics for engineers, promoting
professionalism, integrity, and responsible practices within the engineering
community.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD):
PEC encourages and mandates Continuing Professional Development programs for
registered engineers. This ensures that engineers stay updated with the latest
advancements in their fields and maintain their professional competence
throughout their careers.
International Collaboration: PEC
collaborates with international engineering bodies and organizations, fostering
cooperation and facilitating the recognition of Pakistani engineers'
qualifications and expertise on the global stage.
Research and Development: The council
engages in research and development activities to enhance engineering
education, improve professional practices, and contribute to the technological
advancement of Pakistan.
Industry Interaction: PEC interacts with
industries and employers to understand their needs and requirements, aligning
engineering education with industry demands to produce graduates equipped with
relevant skills and knowledge.
PEC's structure comprises elected and nominated members representing various engineering disciplines and stakeholders. The council also has various committees and sub-committees that handle specific aspects of its functions, such as accreditation, registration, and CPD.
The Pakistan Engineering Council has been instrumental in improving the quality of engineering education and the engineering profession in the country. By setting and enforcing standards, promoting ethical conduct, and facilitating professional development, PEC ensures that engineers in Pakistan contribute effectively to the nation's development and progress.
